Safety Specialist Dangerous Goods Officer
Your role
The Aer Lingus Safety Management System (SMS) has overall responsibility for the effective management of safety & security throughout the airline. The Safety Specialist – Dangerous Goods Ofifcer (DG Officer) plays a crucial role in ensuring the highest standards of safety within Aer Lingus. Reporting directly to the Director of Safety & Security (DSS), the DG Officer is responsible for overseeing and implementing safety programs, policies, and initiatives to ensure Aer Lingus complies with the highest standards in storage, transport and disposal of Dangerous Goods (DG) and Hazardous Material (Hazmat). This responsibility includes the development and maintenance of a regulatory training regime, providing support to the Operations Control Centre team, as well as informing and auditing Aer Lingus Customer and Commercial policies and procedures.
Your responsibilities as a Safety Specialist – Dangerous Goods Officer will include:
- Develop and periodically update all corporate policies relating to Dangerous Goods to include reviewing and approving of all business units’ Dangerous Goods management policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable Dangerous Goods laws and regulations.
- Represent Aer Lingus interests at industry meetings/conferences (UK CAA, IATA, Dangerous Goods European Liaison Group, etc.).
- Point of contact for State Regulators and State Authorities and act in the role as Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) in accordance with EC (Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment) Regulations 2011.
- Ensuring compliance with applicable Health & Safety Acts and Regulations, including ‘The Chemicals Acts 2008 and 2010.
- Completion and upkeep of DG risk assessments and be the Company’s Subject Matter Expert (SME) on Dangerous Goods and develop all Companywide DG training material.
- Accountable for integration of DG into existing safety management processes.
- Accountable for ensuring all DG related incidents are investigated in a timely manner and recorded in the Aer Lingus SMS whilst also providing support for all line areas.
- Upkeep of all key DG information sources for colleagues and customers alike. (Web, DG Policy Manual, CSM/OPS manuals, etc.).
- Chair of the quarterly DG steering group meeting (attended by all departments with involvement in the acceptance, storage, handling, transportation of DGs, Engineering, Customer and Cargo) and responsible for follow-up to ensure and identified actions are implemented.
- Provide guidance and support to Customer Contact Centre colleagues in responding to guest queries.
- Attend Monthly Departmental SAGs and deliver enhanced DG training overview to departmental DG specialists.
- Coordinate DG policies and procedures with Occupational Health & Safety requirements and act as the focal point for Aer Lingus with Office of Radiological Protection.
- Lead in the development and promotion of Aer Lingus’ accessibility policies and procedures.
Your qualifications and key criteria
- Trained to IATA Category 6 standards.
- Minimum five years’ experience in Dangerous Goods processes and procedures.
- Understanding of Dangerous Goods regulations in context of Air Operations.
- Ability to interpret new or existing DG Regulations as they relate to all aspects of operations.
- Strong analytical skills & strong attention to detail.
- Ability to identify, analyze and assess Dangerous Goods data in preparing written reports, including accident, incident and investigation reports.
- Capacity to summarise complex situations and convey key messages to a wide audience including senior management.
- Good communication skills and the capacity to liaise with internal and external parties.
- Effective organisation skills and ability to handle large volume of work in an efficient and timely manner in a pressurised environment.
- A high level of integrity with the ability to maintain confidentiality investigation process.
- Flexible approach to work with a passion for continuous improvement.
- Good awareness of our commercial priorities and our brand identity.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage, motivate and influence individuals.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the talent to present facts and opinions articulately, persuasively and objectively.

- Computer literate with a proficiency in Microsoft Office and other Aer Lingus systems.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
- Eligible to live and work in the EU.
- Current unrestricted worldwide passport.
- Be in possession or be able to pass a strict airport security vetting procedure which includes a 5 year background check* (or be in possession of a current airside pass for the airport this position is based in Dublin).

Desirable criteria
Third Level qualification in Safety Management or Occupational Health & Safety from recognised Aviation Centre of Learning.
Accident Investigation training qualification.
Operational experience with an airline, airport or Ground Handling Agency.
Project Management qualification.
